Hassan Al Kontar

Hassan Al Kontar is a Syrian-born Canadian who was stranded at Kuala Lumpur International Airport from for seven months after being unable to return to his home country of Syria, of which he has been in exile since 2011 because of his refusal to join the Syrian military. His plight has been compared to Tom Hanks's character in the film The Terminal, who was inspired by the real-life story of Mehran Karimi Nasseri who lived in France's Charles de Gaulle Airport for 18 years. Also known as “The Man at the Airport” - of which his self-written book is titled - Dylan sat down with Hassan to discuss his life, his journey as a refugee, and his experience being stranded at the airport and his subsequent time in jail. They also discuss the current state of global immigration and some of the prevailing cultural attitudes towards refugees in general.
