Vancouver's Iconic Video Store Closes

In a world of online streaming, is there room for video stores?

Competing with the convenience of mediocrity

We caught up with Black Dog Video owner Darren Gay in his final weeks before closing his video store of 25 years. A staple in the neighbourhood, Darren founded the store as an alternative to the mainstream and (in his words) dire selection that major chains like Blockbuster had to offer back in the day.

In recent years, with streaming services cornering the market and COVID indiscriminately having a negative effect on small business, it became no longer feasible for Darren to keep his shop.

He discusses why he got into film in the first place, his legacy in the local neighbourhood, and his views on where film culture is headed in the years to come.

He will still be operating his store online, and continue running his film podcast.
